SONGS – I Pray

This is easily, hands-down, the best thing that came out of my first trip to Nashville. Sitting down with Carl & Dan, we were in between two other songs, trying to figure out what to tackle next.
.
Dan started strumming this very mesmerizing, contemplative sound. Carl hopped on the keyboard and put his special touch on it. WOW – what a moment! I wept because (1) it was beautiful, (2) I was in awe of their ability to ad lib musically and (3) it fit an idea for a song I had on the flight out there.
.
The sound, the melody and the mood were perfect for what I wanted to become a song about prayer. Dan asked if I liked it and I was speechless. When I finally said how much I loved it, we decided to stop everything and write this song. We knew we had something and believed God meant for us to write that song.
.
A little while later, “I Pray” appeared. For me, the song captures the essence of prayer – desiring to be in the presence of God.
.
It’s simple, yet speaks volumes of how we come before God. I believe sometimes a song puts you in just the right place, giving you pause to reflect, cast your cares at Jesus’ feet and send up praises.
.
At first the verses were about the troubles, the circumstances we are in, where we cry out to God. But, I wanted to show that we also pray when we are joyful and feel blessed. Prayer is a special gift we have and it shouldn’t be reserved for catastrophes. In the Word, we’re asked to pray without ceasing – the good days, the little moments that make you smile, anytime, anywhere – pray.
.
Before my feet hit the floor in the morning, I try to say a prayer of gratitude – just something as simple as “Thank you, God – I am grateful for this day.”
.
1 John 5:14-15: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God, that if we ask anything that is according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of Him.”
.
1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18:
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
.
When you want to be near to God – just pray.
