SONGS – These Hands

Dan asked me to read a poem from the 1800s, called “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” He thought I would appreciate the sentiment. Though “Hand that Rocks the Cradle,” creeps me out because of the movie by that name, I liked the poem and started writing the song with it in mind.
If you look down at your hands, you’ll see the marks of time and of labor. If you’re a Mom, you’ll remember wiping tears, fixing scrapes, picking children up, holding and rocking them, scratching backs, rubbing shoulders, fixing meals, folding laundry, making beds – all with those same hands.
I knew this was an important story to tell. And, I do feel that it tells the right story – that yes, sometimes we get lost in our duties, but if we step back, we’ll see what we’re really responsible for – training up our children in the way they should go.
The song speaks to how important Moms are. God knows that I feel invisible a lot of days – overworked, under-appreciated and not always the me, I saw myself becoming. And, I know I’m not alone in this. On a daily basis, it’s hard to see the rewards. It’s hard to see the purpose behind all the mundane tasks we Moms take care of.
But what a privilege to be able to take your children’s hands in your own and lead them straight to the feet of Jesus, where He’s waiting with open arms to love them and wash all their sins away.
Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.
