WHAT'S YOUR GIFT?

WRITING – born with it?

I LOVE WRITING – that’s a given, I guess – I’ve always been a writer. I used to write poetry when I was in grade school and have written ever since. I used to get paid to write press releases and news stories, public service announcements and editorials. Now, I write mailers for our church, songs for myself and others and journals like the one you’re reading. I’ve always loved to write and I really believe it’s how God wired me.

I have my Grandpa’s old Underwood typewriter. He was a writer too – mostly of incredibly touching and brave love letters to my Grandmother during WWII. He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He was awarded a purple heart for his service. His & my birthday are only a few days apart, so I had the honor to share birthday parties with him. That gave us a unique kinship and I loved having that privilege. We named our middle child after him and he’s just as spunky, fearless and feisty as my Grandpa was.

Interestingly, my Grandma was a writer as well – yes, she wrote beautiful letters to him during their war-time separation, but later in life, she was also a writer for a local newspaper. My Mom is a gifted writer and used to write stories for me, even including all my friends for a personalized story for my 8th birthday. I still have that book and it’s a tribute to the type of involved, creative and fun Mom she was – and still is. She now writes stories for and with her grandchildren.

Writing is just in my blood.
