WHAT'S YOUR GIFT?

Getting Laid Off

February 19, 2010, Posted by Mela at 4:31 PM

I have quit many jobs – one Summer shearing Christmas trees with my best friend – way too much work for the money, in my opinion. Then, at Little Caesar’s my junior year of high school – called to say I wasn’t coming in anymore. I know – classy.
.
In my career in public relations, I quit several jobs (all for good reasons, of course):

  1. AVA Advertising, Milwaukee – moving to California (to follow boyfriend)
  2. Fleishman-Hillard, Los Angeles – moving with new fiance, back to Midwest.
  3. Shandwick, Minneapolis – wooed by smaller firm (&larger salary)
  4. Carmichael Lynch-Spong, Minneapolis – was pregnant; shorter commute with hubby
  5. Shandwick, Minneapolis(2) – stayed home with new daughter-I was up front about my intentions when hired

But, I’ve never been laid off or fired. I know plenty of people who have, though and it’s not fun. Whether you liked the job or not, it’s crushing to your ego to be told “we don’t want you.”
.
I recently watched this short film called Lemonade. I really enjoyed it – even got a little emotional watching it. My husband used to work in advertising and you may have noticed, my background is Ad/PR. I’ve been in a lot of agency settings.
.
And, while I haven’t been laid off, it still resonated with me. I kind of feel like I laid myself off from the status quo and gave myself permission to dream and do something entirely different than what was expected. In that way, I feel like I know what they are talking about.
.
What would you do if you got laid off, or could do something entirely different than what’s expected of you?

Disclaimer: This is 35 minutes long and there’s a few swear words in this – top shelf ones, so I recommend this for adults only.
