WHAT'S YOUR GIFT?

What I learned at Relevant

October 25, 2010, Posted by Mela at 10:50 AM

I spent Wed-Sat of this past week in Harrisburg, PA for the Relevant Conference, for Christian bloggers. I went both as a writer and as a sponsor of the conference. I couldn’t think of a better fit, as 4:10 Ministries encourages people to use their gifts in service to God and others.
.

Me with my beautiful Relevant roomies, Kristin from Lovefeast Table & Ashley from Our Daily Chocolate.
.
Because I attended Blissdom with Chris Ann last February, I had an idea of what to expect. However, as I sat through the sessions and listened to the speakers, the comments and the casual conversations, I noticed how each word was aimed more at Christian living than at blogging.
.
Sure we heard tips and how-tos, but the focus remained on the One who brought us there.
.
Our eyes must stay fixed on Jesus.
.
What does that look like through the lens of blogging?

  • Being in the Word often … “We cannot share what we do not possess” … Sally Clarkson
    .

  • Reading about God’s Word is not the same as being in the Word … I spend a lot of time around the Word instead of being IN it.
    .

  • Seeking His will not only for your life, but for your blog {or insert your job, your next decision, etc.} … Being prayerful how God might use your gifts & community
    .

  • Remembering that playing the numbers game is a slippery, pridefilled road … rest in His affirmation, instead of lusting after comments, followers and money
    .

  • “Seek great things for yourself, SEEK THEM NOT.” Jeremiah 45:5 as pointed out by Courtney Joseph
    .

  • Trying to be the “next” anyone squelches the fire God meant explicitly for you … or as someone once told me: “sing with your own voice.”
    .

  • Limiting distractions, putting God first and tearing down any idols you’ve built in His place … altars of social media, busyness, recognition
    .

  • Taking a sabbath from blogging … Your readers will survive and respect your desire for self-preservation over self-promotion

.
I was filled up by the fellowship and will share more in the coming days. My favorite moments were spent in the corridors and corners, listening as other women shared beautifully and freely their passions, their struggles and Jesus.
.
I watched time and time again as women came alongside others to lift them up to the Lord. I heard shouts and songs of praise, soul-nourishing laughter and the sound of stillness.
.
Coming home from any time away takes an adjustment of attitude, expectation and energy. Our lists often get clouded with “should be’s” and I want to encourage you to let the soul-filling words you heard digest.
.
Find rest in His comfort and provision. Pray and seek wisdom.
.
Listen for His whisper, trust as you walk in faith that He guides you. He will use you and your gifts for the good and glorious.
.
He will be the One to open doors when your heart is able to cross the threshold intact.
.
He is your audience and He delights in your offerings … He does not count them big or small.
.
He knows you and calls you by name.
.
You are loved.

Wow! What a weekend you had! What I learned from your post today is that in all I do to seek the Lord’s approval, not the approval of others. I’m so glad you had a great time. Hope to see you soon.

That’s exactly right, Kelli – definitely what I took away from the conference too. Hope you enjoyed your weekend with your Mom & Dad visiting!

  5. Mela,
I loved getting to know you better! My highlights were in the corridors and corners as well…it was all the one on one time with other women who seek Him first! Can’t wait to do it again!

Hi Mela! Stumbled across your blog, via a Relevant connection {I hope to make it next year}, and I was SO blessed by your insight.
