The (in)courage community chose my song “Surrounded by Your Love” for their newest video. I was delighted, honored and humbled (and a teensy bit excited – ok, A LOT excited – I may have squealed)!
Here’s the video. This community of women, many of whom I’m proud to say I’ve met and connected with, are [...]

Coming Home

“I’m coming home to me
I’m coming home to see
My days of old are gone for good
I’m gonna live just like I should
Each step of the way
Is another leap of faith
I’m on my way”

These are lyrics from “I’m on My Way,” a song I wrote for a friend’s Mom who was in the midst of a big personal transformation.

Less than a year ago, I was struggling to find my identity. I had filled up my life with my three children, teaching Sunday School, volunteering, helping direct Vacation Bible School for 250+ kids. Over the years, I dabbled in home-based businesses and in every creative pastime available, trying to find that spark.

Don’t get me wrong – I was happy doing those things and I did take some time to write, which was always my greatest love. However, I had lost what made me, “me.” Intensely creative and passionate, I felt unable to marry my gifts with what I thought God had planned for me.

Then, I found my voice.

More than 30 songs later, I’ve been invited to sing at fundraisers, the St. Paul Prayer Breakfast and I share my songs with local women’s shelters and church groups. Additionally, a song I wrote for Healing House, an amazing women’s recovery ministry, is being used as a video for their annual fundraiser. I’m thrilled to be able to lend my voice and words to that project.

I now know God was holding these songs in His mighty hands, waiting for me to accept the responsibility of bringing them to the world. As soon as I said, “Ok, Lord, I’m ready,” He dropped them for me to catch and to carry forward. I’m now on my way to recording my debut album, all because I followed God’s leading.

I’m a singer/songwriter – I’ve come home to that knowledge and acceptance and it feels great to finally BE HOME.

Talent Show

Posted by Mela January 5, 2009, under Faith | No Comments

We have a quote by Martin Luther, on the wall downstairs, above the keyboard that says, “Next to the word of God, MUSIC deserves the highest praise.”

Music is a great equalizer – in so many forms, it can be a great comforter and a way to express joy and praise. Our Christian dayschool put on an awesome Christmas program, called Savior of the Nations. My daughter’s class learned a song in Japanese, my son’s class – a song in Korean. They all sang Silent Night in German. It didn’t matter that most of the crowd only understood the English verses – it was just as beautiful – maybe, even more so – because these children took the time to learn something new and challenging to show that Jesus came for ALL people. Even though we’re told in the Great Commission to go and make disciples of ALL nations, the concept seems as foreign as the countries we’ve only heard of.

We stick to what we know. Just like our talents. We often go the safe route – tip-toeing through life trying not to make waves, staying under the radar – leaving well enough alone.

That would be fine, if we knew the gospel could reach all corners of the earth without our help. I believe everyone needs to start making waves. God said he wouldn’t flood the world with water again, but that shouldn’t stop us from flooding the world with the saving truth of His word.

If you think – aww, nobody cares, I don’t have anything to say or I don’t know enough, you’re wrong. If you have the joy of the Lord, you have more than most people on this planet. You have everything you need. Share it – it’s good news after all . . . and everyone likes good news.

Embracing the life God wants

Posted by Mela September 20, 2008, under Music, Writing | No Comments

This morning, I had the distinct privilege to share my message & my music at the Greater St. Paul Prayer Breakfast. Talk about embracing the life God wants for me! A year ago, I would have laughed at the notion of singing my own songs. Now, it’s become second-nature.

My being selected to sing at this event happened in a rather peculiar way – peculiar, of course only to me – not God. It was his doing that I found myself in the office of the Chairperson, Sharon Murphy early this year. I had gone there, not to talk about the Prayer Breakfast, but her business and how we (we, meaning Intentional Serenity’s team) could help her polish her marketing materials. In that meeting, we discussed this new anointing on my life and how I was focusing on music. At her request, I sang a few songs and she asked me right then and there to perform at the Prayer Breakfast.

I’m grateful to have been at an event dedicated to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and praying for our leaders and this country. These events are beneficial, sure, but I pray that we don’t leave these discussions of faith to that room. We are blessed in this country with the freedom to be able to stand up for our convictions and our God – a God who created us and loved us enough to put on flesh and die for us. That’s worth talking about.

May this day be one where you pray without ceasing and turn to God for answers. He’s waiting to hear from you. I look forward to see how He shows up each and every day in the everyday blessings and the big shining moments.
